Capture Your Halloween Memories
Halloween casts its own enchantment—bold hues, playful disguises, and twinkling lights turn every snapshot into a little bit of hocus-pocus. Whether you’re documenting your children’s excitement, your festive home décor, or a spooky night out, a few thoughtful touches can help you capture the spirit of the season with ease. This October, as we scrapbook Halloween, let’s capture not just the costumes and candy, but the wonder and excitement that make the night unforgettable.
Photographing Kids in Costumes:
Snap photos early in the evening when there’s still plenty of natural light. Before the trick-or-treat chaos begins, take a few posed shots to showcase the details of their costumes—especially masks, face paint, or handmade accessories. Encourage action shots too: kids running up to a door, comparing candy, or walking together down a decorated street often make the most heartwarming memories.
Capturing Decorations:
Take wide shots of your entire porch or yard to show off your display, but don’t forget close-ups. Focus on glowing jack-o’-lanterns, wreaths, or a favorite spooky vignette. Shooting at twilight—just as the lights start to glow but before it’s completely dark—helps balance the mood and keeps details crisp.
Night Photography Tips:
Halloween nights are made for drama! For clearer, sharper images, steady your camera or phone on a tripod or solid surface and avoid using flash when possible. Instead, experiment with night mode or longer exposure settings to capture glowing pumpkins and twinkling lights. Try a few silhouette shots too—kids’ shadows against a foggy backdrop or the warm glow of a doorway can create striking effects.
Top 5 Moments to Document:
- Candid shots of getting ready. Think costume prep, face painting, and pumpkin carving.
- Group photos of the trick or treat gang or your family in costume.
- Decorations around your neighborhood. Ghosts, witches, and skeletons have popped up on my block! I also love to capture displays with scarecrows, hay bales, mums and pumpkins. Don’t forget a close up of your jack-o-lantern.
- Trick or Treat action. If your gang stops under the street light to compare their candy haul, snap a candid! I also love the idea capturing their anticipation as they ring the doorbell at the first house.
- Don’t forget a few photos at the end of the night. My favorite is the candy haul.
Once you’ve captured these highlights, print your favorites and add them to your scrapbook while the stories are still fresh. Journaling how your child selected her costume or which house gave the best treats will bring your Halloween pages to life for years to come. Looking for more seasonal tips?
