Three Ways to Add Shimmer and Shine to Your Fall Projects

As the days grow shorter and the sunlight takes on that golden seasonal glow, it’s the perfect time to bring a little shimmer into your Autumn papercrafts. Adding shine doesn’t just make your handmade cards and scrapbook pages sparkle—it adds depth, movement, and a touch of magic to your Fall crafting. Here are three simple ways to add shimmer and shine to your next creation.

1. Mica Spray Magic

A light mist of mica spray gives your paper a luminous sheen that catches the light beautifully. Use it to enhance textured surfaces or to add a subtle glow to die cuts and backgrounds. It’s an effortless way to elevate your design and make Fall colors—like mustard, pumpkin, and deep red—come alive.

If you’re new to mica sprays, start with one or two fine mists from a bit of distance. (Heavy sprays are perfect for grungy, spooky looks.) Let it dry, then tilt the card to watch the shimmer dance in the light.  If you need a more subtle sparkle or more control than a spray, try a Wink of Stella shimmer brush.

2. Foiled Accents

Gold foil accents are an elegant way to introduce shine and luxury to your crafts. Whether you use metallic cardstock, hot foil systems like the Spellbinders Glimmer, or pre-foiled embellishments, even small touches can create a big impact. Try adding metallic cardstock mats to your sentiment strips or around the edges of your design for a polished finish.

3. Metallic Ink Highlights

Metallic ink pads in shades of gold, copper, or bronze are ideal for adding gentle highlights.  I like the Delicata ink pads from Tsukineko.  Lightly rub the ink across embossed areas or textured cardstock to create dimension and bring out the details.  I also like inking the edges of my mats and die cuts with gold or silver.

Adding shimmer and shine can transform any Fall-themed project into something truly eye-catching. Experiment with different techniques and materials to find the perfect balance of glow and texture.  Want more ideas for seasonal papercrafting projects?  Take a look at these recent posts: Sweater Weather Stories, Trick or Treat Treasures, and Scrapbooking Fall Festivals and Family Traditions.
